A common and widely recognized limitation of SAP Extended Warehouse Management is that once the putaway of stock is completed during inbound delivery processing, reversing the action is typically not possible. While there are technical constraints that contribute to this, it is partially true.
However, with certain standard configurations, it is possible to enable the reversal process within the standard system. Once the stock is stored in the final bin, it loses its inbound delivery item reference and becomes available for any warehouse process, such as picking for outbound delivery orders. However, before picking or any other warehouse activity occurs, it is possible to reverse the stock using the exception codes DIFD or COCO. The prerequisite is that the stock must retain the exact same attributes as when the putaway was performed. This process is technically known as “confirmation correction,” but from an ERP perspective, it functions the same as a standard reversal.
This is a convenient solution, but it comes with certain limitations. The confirmation correction process has at least the following constraints:
– Serialized materials.
– Quality inspection performed after putaway (stock type changes).
– HU-tasks used during putaway, including Nested HUs.
– No reversals anymore after the DWM period is finished.
Newer versions of S/4HANA allowed the reversal of HUs received from production, which do not cover all business scenarios.
While the limitations are understandable, we know that business needs to run and sometimes the reversal is a must. For that reason, ABAX Consulting designed an alternative process capable to reverse the putaway in all cases. The solution follows the idea of performing a “picking for inbound”, similar to a picking for outbound delivery order (ODO), but used in an inbound scenario. This means that the stock needs to exist in the final bin where the putaway was initially performed, with the same attributes. This is the best scenario and prioritized by our solution.
In exceptional situations, if the stock does not exist anymore, because for example, it has been changed with a posting change or consumed by an outbound delivery, our solution recreates the stock with the needed attributes to allow the reversal. This approach should only be used as an exceptional solution, and requires stock corrections via Physical Inventory process later.
While the solution is custom, the design reuses standard coding and preserves document consistency as much as possible. Our solution works with reference to the original DIFD/COCO correction confirmation concept, however, it has been enhanced with a reversal cockpit for better usability and to support scenarios beyond the standard functionality. The solution offered by our company is ready-to-run add-on, with fast deployment methodology, offering high gains in the short-term.
